UNISDR is a dedicated secretariat to facilitate the implementation of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR).It is mandated to serve as the focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of disaster reduction and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations system and regional organizations and activities in socio‐economic and humanitarian fields. It is an organisational unit of the UN Secretariat and is led by the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction.
In March 2015, 187 nations adopted a 15-year framework to reduce the human and economic impact of disasters caused by hazards, titled the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. In September 2015, UNISDR, being the organization charged with implementing the Sendai Framework, integrated its private sector activities under one initiative, named ARISE.
ARISE is a UNISDR-led network of private sector entities, whose members voluntarily commit to align with the Sendai Framework. Members share information, experience, activities, and projects, while the level of involvement and resources is at the discretion of each member. Most activities and interactions are a local and regional level, and ARISE will be structured accordingly.
